In 1788 Sydney was the site of the first European colony. The settlement began in Sydney Cove and was lead by Captain Arthur Phillip leader of the first fleet from Britain. Sydney is now a multicultural, highly urbanised and modern dynamic city in the south-east corner of Australia.

Sydney is home to many famous sights such as the Harbour Bridge and Opera house. The city is surrounded by bays, rivers, beaches, the Blue Mountains and national parks.

The city has an average public transport network, with buses and trains, as well as a small monorail and tram network in the centre of town, so it’s very easy to get around. There’s also the ferry network running in Sydney Harbour. However, the car is still king when it comes to transportation in Sydney especially when you venture away from the centralised districts.

This is one of the best places in the country to pick up Australian wines by the bottle or the case. The shop stocks a wide range of wines from all over Australia, including bottles from small boutique wineries you’re unlikely to find anywhere else. Individual tastings are possible at any time, and there are formal tastings every Thursday and Friday from 4 to 6pm. Wine is exported all over the world from here, so if you want to send home a crate of your favorite, you can be assured it will arrive in one piece. The center owns the wine bar and bistro next door, which is open Monday through Saturday from 6am until 10pm. You can drink here without dining.

Just below Quay is Doyles, a name synonymous with seafood in Sydney. Most customers sit outside to enjoy the fabulous views across the harbor, though green guard railings do somewhat interrupt the view of the Opera House. Businesspeople and tourists come here if they don’t want to lay out the cash for Quay or if they fancy a more relaxed style. The most popular dish is basically pricey fish and chips, which costs A$35 (US$28/UK£14). You can also get a dozen oysters for A$30 (US$24/UK£12) or half a lobster for A$65 (US$52/UK£26). One word of advice though, Australian lobsters (crayfish in reality) aren’t nearly as tasty as lobsters in other parts of the world in my experience. Still, if you want the views and it’s a nice day, then it’s a nice place to sit.

Tucked away at the back of the Radisson Plaza Hotel is one of those great restaurants that could easily compete with some of the Michelin-starred classics in Europe. The chef, Tony Bilson, is a well-known Sydney personality and the quality of his French-influenced food is a testament to some 30 years in the business. The restaurant is modern in its look, but comfortable too, and the service is impeccable. Expect something in the same vein as slow-roasted suckling pig with grilled pineapple, or grilled breasts of wild pigeon with foie gras.
